The Baltimore-based band Icarus Phoenix, led by renowned songwriter Drew Danburry, released their highly anticipated introspective fourth studio album, "I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said," This album explores the raw emotions and harsh truths that accompany major life transitions, with a special emphasis on the aftermath of a terrible breakup and the difficulties of managing co-parenting.
Drew Danburry describes the album as a profoundly personal investigation of his feelings after his divorce and the challenge of being driven out of his son's life. Danburry harnesses his emotions into a narrative that faces the melancholy and problems of life head-on, with 40 tracks produced in just three days at June Audio in Provo, Utah. The Album depicts a journey through pain to emerge stronger and lighter on the other side.
Icarus Phoenix collaborated with producer Jed Jones, famed for his work with Post Malone and The Killers, to create a melancholy yet uplifting sound. Long-time pals Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova), Justin Pacheco (bass), and Andrew Young (drums) contribute to the album, as do Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) and Rocky Cordray (Teleprom).
"I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said" depicts the difficult process of recreating one's identity once the foundation of one's existence is shattered. The album is a testimony to the human spirit's perseverance, allowing listeners to find peace and understanding in their trials. It's a cathartic event not only for Danburry, but for anyone who has encountered comparable obstacles.
Icarus Phoenix continues to astound with their real and powerful music, having earned a cult following through their inclusion on Stereogum's albums of note with their "Son" EP and a DIY tour of Japan and the United States. This new album is another step in their progress, showcasing a band that isn't afraid to address the darkest areas of the human experience while still delivering a ray of hope.
"I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said" will strike a deep chord with people who have suffered loss, heartbreak, or struggled to redefine themselves. It's an album that encourages listeners to confront their pain, learn from it, and eventually discover the light within.
