Eddie Cohn, the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer from Los Angeles, delivers a compelling new track, Stop Waving the Gun, a heartfelt call for empathy and reflection on America’s persistent gun culture. Cohn brings his signature intensity and emotional depth to this song, taking a stand against the violence that has increasingly impacted communities across the U.S. Written during an emotionally charged time, the track reflects Cohn’s frustrations with gun violence and the lack of progress in addressing this issue.
Stop Waving the Gun is a collaborative masterpiece, featuring Brett Farkas on electric guitars, Sean Hurley on bass, Jake Reed on drums, and Philip Peterson on strings. With most of the songs recorded in Los Angeles, Cohn’s use of remote sessions highlights the flexibility of today’s music production. The strings were added by Peterson from Seattle, while mixing and mastering were done by Kevin Penner in Hawaii, adding unique layers and depth to the soundscape.
Inspired by grunge-era greats like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and U2, Cohn channels the intense vocal stylings of Eddie Vedder and the atmospheric guitar influences of U2’s The Edge. His admiration for these rock icons shines through in Stop Waving the Gun, which has a raw and authentic rock sound with hints of 90s nostalgia and reflective grunge elements. In his arrangement, Cohn made a deliberate choice to keep production organic, featuring core elements like drums, bass, and guitar to create a sound that is straightforward yet powerful, supporting his urgent message.
Eddie explains, “I was watching the aftermath of another tragic school shooting, and I just hit a wall. I was so frustrated with the endless news cycle and the repetitive inaction. This song is my way of processing that anger, capturing my hope for change even though it feels like it’s ingrained in our culture.”
Known for his deep insights into society, Cohn uses his platform to raise awareness and inspire action. Stop Waving the Gun is more than a song, it’s a protest, a plea for understanding, and a call to prioritize humanity over sensationalized violence. It resonates with anyone feeling disillusioned with a system that often feels like it’s perpetuating the problem rather than working toward change. Eddie Cohn’s Stop Waving the Gun isn’t just a protest song but an anthem of hope that reinforces our ability to stand up, take action, and reshape our culture.
