Delta of Venus, the iconic indie rock band from Mystic, Connecticut, has emerged from decades of silence to release their newest work, Disengaged b/w Slipping. This two-track single marks the band's triumphant return after a 25-year hiatus, showcasing a refined approach to shoegaze and indie pop that retains the creative spirit of their early days while embracing new sonic possibilities.
Delta of Venus was originally formed in 1993 as an experiment among friends exploring uncharted musical territory. Each member picked up instruments they had little to no experience with, aiming to create something truly unique. The band built a loyal following in the indie rock corridors between NYC and Providence, RI, releasing cassettes, a 7-inch single, and the full-length album Make Yrself Xtra Special. However, the realities of life eventually put their journey on pause in 1997.
Fast forward to 2022, founding member Ellery Twining embarked on solo projects that reignited his creative spark. In 2024, he reunited with original members Mat Tarbox and Shawn Fake to rekindle Delta of Venus. This collaboration birthed Disengaged b/w Slipping, a work that challenges traditional song structures in favor of evolving musical movements.
Recorded at Dirt Floor Recording and Production, the single eschews conventional verse-chorus-verse formats. Instead, Delta of Venus crafts sonic architecture where melodies and harmonies intertwine organically. With layers of reverb-soaked guitar, hypnotic rhythms, and ethereal vocals, these tracks capture the essence of shoegaze while incorporating experimental indie pop elements.
“Disengaged” is a meditative exploration of disconnection and introspection, its swirling guitars and atmospheric tones creating an immersive experience. “Slipping” complements its counterpart with a sense of fluidity and motion, conveying themes of vulnerability and self-reckoning.
Original vocalist Dawn Estabrooks had to step away due to logistical concerns, leaving an opening for fresh talent. Enter Issy, a serendipitous addition discovered through a chance conversation between shifts at Mystic Disc, where Ellery has worked for over 20 years. Issy recorded the vocals for both tracks in just three hours, delivering performances that Eric from Dirt Floor described as “a gem.” Her haunting voice perfectly encapsulates the band’s vision, breathing life into their intricate soundscapes.
Disengaged b/w Slipping stands as a testament to Delta of Venus's resilience and artistic evolution. The band’s ability to stay true to their roots while embracing innovation makes this release a must-listen for fans of shoegaze and indie pop alike. This single invites listeners to rediscover a band that refuses to be bound by convention, crafting music as timeless as it is transformative.
