Goddamn Wolves’ ‘The DOOM EP’: A Compelling Fusion of Angst and Melody

Raleigh-based indie rock trio Goddamn Wolves has unleashed The DOOM EP, a four-track collection that encapsulates both the dread of uncertain times and the hope that lingers beneath it. Formed in 2018, the band draws from their alt-rock roots, Pixies and The New Pornographers while channeling a modern edge reminiscent of The Beths and Bully.

The EP opens with “We’re Doomed,” a track that belies its grim title with a subtle optimism. Featuring the band’s signature male/female harmonies from Chris Weilding and Laura McCullough, it delivers a message about resilience: moving forward despite challenges. Drew Foglia’s inventive drumming adds a dynamic punch, amplifying the song’s energetic undertone.

“Later Than You Think” sees Laura step into the spotlight as lead vocalist and songwriter. She delivers a heartfelt performance that reflects her growing confidence and creative freedom within the band. The interplay between her bass lines and Chris’s guitar melodies creates a lush backdrop, emphasizing the trio's supportive synergy.

“Get Your Coat” lightens the mood with its breezy tempo and unexpected piano accompaniment by guest musician Dakota Proctor. Originally an older track by Chris, the song’s refreshing arrangement demonstrates the band’s willingness to experiment while maintaining their core sound.

The EP concludes with “So Long,” a poignant piece born during the COVID quarantine. The track’s wistful lyrics shared vocals, and live drums give it a raw, emotional depth. The haunting three-part harmony in the outro is a fitting farewell, leaving listeners both contemplative and inspired.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Raleigh’s Found After Dark studio by Max Gowan, The DOOM EP showcases Goddamn Wolves at their most collaborative and inventive. With its melodic richness and thematic weight, this EP is a must-listen for thoughtful, infectious indie rock fans. Goddamn Wolves proves once again that even in the face of doom, creativity thrives.
